How Indoor and Beach Volleyball Differ
Here at City Beach Volleyball, we offer both indoor and outdoor beach volleyball, letting you play any way you want. But what are the biggest differences between playing on a court and playing in the sand? If you’ve played before, you probably already know the answer. If you usually play inside and haven’t played beach volleyball before, it’s definitely something you should experience. Today in the City Beach blog, we’ll talk about the differences between these two styles of play.
The rules in beach volleyball differ quite a bit. For one, while indoor volleyball will have six players per side, while beach volleyball will only have two. Also instead of a five-set match, the match will only be a best-of-three match where each game is played to 21 points, as opposed to the typical 25. Also, side changes will occur every seven points, as opposed to the typical indoor volleyball game, where side changes happen every game. Tipping is also illegal in sand volleyball.
The ball used in beach volleyball isn’t much different than an indoor one. They’re typically softer and a bit bigger. You’ll want to make sure you’re using a volleyball that’s specified for outdoor use in order to get the best play.
Due to the smaller amount of players, the court will need to be smaller too. Beach volleyball courts are 16x8m while indoor courts are 18x9m. They’re also smaller because sand is harder to traverse, making it easier for players to get to the ball and keep it alive. This makes for a fast-paced and exciting play style.
As we mentioned, sand is difficult to move agilely in, so expect to be a bit slower and expend more energy getting to the ball. Beach volleyball also requires players to be able to play pretty much every position, since there’s only two of them. This is great because it helps you to build a diverse skill set. If you typically play indoor, this makes it worthwhile because you’ll have more experience in your arsenal.
